Privacy Policy

Effective August 29, 2026

Hallways helps you reconnect with the people you went to school with. That work runs on personal information, so this page explains what we collect, where it comes from, and the choices you have.

Who we are

Hallways is run by Hallways, Inc., an Iowa nonprofit corporation organized under section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code. We connect former classmates for non-commercial civic outreach. Hallways is operated from the United States and is intended for people in the United States. For any question about this policy, email info@hallways.vote.

Information you give us

  • Account: your email address and a password.
  • Profile: your name, a former name if yours changed, your city, your high school, and your graduation year.
  • Optional contact details: a phone number and how you prefer to be reached.
  • Requests: messages you send us, such as role requests or a request to add a school.

Information created as you use Hallways

When you volunteer, Hallways stores your work: call results, notes, saved contacts, and corrections you submit. It also stores the materials you upload and basic service activity, such as sign-ins and clicks on meeting links.

Information from public records and other sources

To find the members of a graduating class, we collect records about people who have not signed up, including:

  • State voter files: name, date of birth, address, registration details, and which elections a person voted in. Voter files never show how anyone voted.
  • Public campaign-finance records.
  • Historical school publications and public records: names, class years, school activities, and scanned page images.
  • Licensed data providers: contact details, such as phone numbers, and demographic details, such as age, gender, and race.

We connect these records to work out who was in a class and how to reach them. Matching public records is not perfect, and some links are wrong. The section below for people who are not members explains how to correct or remove a record.

How we use information

We use the information above to:

  • verify that members are who they say they are,
  • build call lists so volunteers reach people they knew,
  • organize school meetings, events, and reunions,
  • send account and service email, and
  • keep the service safe and working.

We do not sell personal information. We do not run advertising. We do not use personal information for commercial purposes.

What volunteers see

Volunteers see a short card for each classmate: name, including a former name where records show one, city and state, a phone number, school and class year, school activities, party registration, and simple indicators we derive from public records, such as how engaged a person has been in past elections. Volunteers do not see dates of birth, street addresses, election participation detail, or contribution records.

Invitations

If you give a volunteer your email address during a call and ask to join, we send you one invitation. We prepare your account from our records so your school and class are ready when you arrive.

Meetings

School meetings run on Google Meet. When you click a meeting link on Hallways, we record the click. We may also store attendance summaries from Google, such as how many people joined a meeting and when they joined and left.

When we share information

A small number of companies process data for us under contract: a database and sign-in provider, a hosting provider, Google, which reads scanned pages with text-recognition and AI tools and runs our calendars and meetings, and licensed data providers. We do not use third-party analytics or advertising services.

We also share information when the law requires it, in response to valid legal process, to protect the rights or safety of members or the public, or if the operations of Hallways, Inc. are reorganized or transferred.

Cookies

Hallways sets only functional cookies: your sign-in session and a few small preferences. We do not set tracking or advertising cookies. Because we do not track anyone across other sites, the site behaves the same with or without a browser Do Not Track signal.

Your choices as a member

Settings lets you control what other members can see about you, set how you want to be contacted, manage email preferences, export your data, and delete your account. Deleting your account removes the records you own and takes your name off shared records. Contributions you made stay, without your name, and your login is scheduled for deletion.

Some states give people extra rights over personal information, such as access, correction, and deletion. Whether or not you are a member, contact us and we will honor the rights that apply to you.

If you are not a member

You can ask what records we hold about you, ask us to correct them, or ask us to remove or stop using them. Email info@hallways.vote. If you tell a volunteer not to call again, we mark your record do-not-call and remove it from call lists.

Retention and security

We keep records only as long as we need them for the purposes above, and we prune working data on a schedule. We use reasonable safeguards, including encryption at rest and role-limited access. Licensed data is deleted when its license ends.

Children

Hallways accounts are for adults 18 or older. We do not knowingly collect information from children. Our archival records are historical, and some describe people as they were when they were students. The section for people who are not members applies to those records too.

Changes to this policy

When this policy changes, we post the new version here and update the date above. If a change is significant, we tell members directly.
